Glamourbaby of the Week

While all of my Glamourbabies thus far have been hand-picked women that I’ve been lucky enough to know on a personal level, this week’s feature is a woman that took my breath away via the magic of the Twitterverse. Living in Asia and missing the undeniable swagger of Asian American women with unmatched flavor, I craved the presence of fierce Asian women who defied the conventional.  Then I found her. Baiyu, in all her splendor: sexy, talented, confident, and a Princeton graduate! Not one to be easily categorized, Baiyu does it all: she’s an R&B singer, model, actress, and was a member of Princeton’s Black Arts Dance Company and a vocalist for the University’s Jazz Ensemble. I’m SO gonna hug her for five whole minutes when I finally get a chance to meet her. Baiyu, see you in NYC soon, I hope!

Full Name: Baiyu Chen

Birthplace and Ethnicity: Xiamen, China/Chinese

How do you define “glamour”?

Glamour is when confidence meets style.  When a woman is just so comfortable being in her own skin that she’s not afraid to scream to the world that she’s bold, sexy and beautiful; when that woman is fearless in the pursuit of her passions and her dreams; when she brings her own unique flavor to whatever it is that she does and to wherever she goes - that’s glamour.

What is your “WHY”? (Why do you do what you do?)

I do what I do because I don’t see anything else making me quite as happy in this lifetime as being able to sing and be creative.  For me, to have love and to have music in my life - two things that are synonymous - is the ultimate victory.  I do what I do because if I did anything else, I wouldn’t be 100% truthful to what I feel like is my ultimate purpose.

Your Message to Young Women.

I was such a geek when I was younger.  I read all those stories about ugly ducklings, and princess transformations, yet somehow, I couldn’t quite figure out if they were real or not.  As I grew into myself, I realized more and more that my own fairytale is something that only I can create.  The day when I stopped caring about what people thought of me, or the way I looked, or the decisions I made was the day that I became free.  Don’t give up.  Don’t give in.  You can have everything that you’ve ever wanted if you just strive for it.
